Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Sacramento Municipal Utilities District (Sacramento, California) (SMUD) is continuing plans for the proposed 400-megawatt Iowa Hill Pumped-Storage Hydro Power Station (Pollock Pines, California). Engineering firm Jacobs Associates (Walnut Creek, California) announced in February that it won an Owner's Engineer services contract for preliminary design and construction services for the project.
The pumped-storage plant would include an upper and lower reservoir, three reversible pump turbine generators, along with underground water conveyance and a powerhouse.
Jacobs Associates said it began drilling in December as part of a geotechnical investigation to help SMUD determine whether the project site is viable. SMUD also awarded Foxfire Constructors (San Clemente, California) to do test drilling.
The project has been under development for quite a while due to economic uncertainty. The project is valued at $450 million, according to Industrial Info. SMUD was unable to get financing for the project, although it received a $5 million grant from the Department of Energy in 2011. The current financing situation is unclear.
The request for proposals (RFP) for the project is scheduled to go out in 2016, with construction in 2017 and project completion in 2020.
