Saudi Arabia Invites Bids for BESS Projects

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), a government-owned entity under Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Energy, has launched a request for qualifications (RFQ) to develop 2 gigawatts (GW)/8 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery energy storage systems (BESS) on a build, own, and operate basis at four locations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. These projects include the Al-Muwyah and Haden BESS projects in Makkah Province, the Al-Khushaybi BESS project in Qassim Province, and the Al-Kahafa BESS project in Hail Province.

Meanwhile, the state-owned utility, Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), has invited engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) companies to install 2.5 GW of BESS capacity across five locations in Saudi Arabia, with each site offering 500 MW, aiming to reduce partial load operation in existing power plants. The identified sites include Riyadh, Qaisumah, Dawadmi, Al Jouf and Rabigh.

Additionally, AlGihaz Holding is implementing a 1,950-MW/7,800-megawatt-hour BESS project in the southern region of Saudi Arabia.

These energy storage projects support Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, which targets a 50% share of renewables in the electricity mix by 2030, including 48 GWh of storage capacity. They will also contribute to the country's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060.
