South Africa's REIPPPP Sees 10.1 GW of Wind, Solar Bids

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) continues to gain momentum, with Round 7 receiving 48 bids for a total of 10.1 gigawatts (GW) of renewable capacity, significantly exceeding the original government floated bids for 3.2 GW of wind and 1.8 GW of solar.

South Africa's renewable ambitions aim to address its chronic energy shortages, dominated by aging coal infrastructure, with plans to add at least 20GW of renewables by 2030.

Major companies competing for solar projects include Red Rocket (South Africa), Mulilo (South Africa), Scatec (Norway) and ACWA Power (Saudi Arabia), while Abo Wind (Germany) and Mulilo are bidding for wind. Preferred bidders for these capacities will be announced by mid-November 2024.
