Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Cooperative-owned ethanol venture, Sterling Ethanol LLC (Sterling, Colorado) has begun construction on Colorado's first fuel ethanol plant. Plans call for the creation of a nameplate 42-million-gallon-per-year ethanol plant that will chew up about 15 million bushels of locally grown corn per year and produce 325,000 tons of distiller's grains and CO2, both by-products of ethanol production. The plant will also incorporate a cogeneration unit to provide electricity and steam for the facility.

Sterling Ethanol is the first to break ground on an ethanol plant in the Rocky Mountain region. Three other plants are currently under development in Colorado, as well as a biodiesel manufacturing facility. When all four plants go into operation, Colorado will have the capability to produce 169 million gallons of the renewable fuel annually.
