Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). The Chemical Processing Industry (CPI) is likely one of the greatest market opportunities for manufacturers of storage tanks. Over the past several years, Industrial Info has reported an average of 200 capital projects annually in the United States and Canada where the addition or construction of new storage capacity was a part of the project scope. Many of these projects include the addition of storage capacity as part of ongoing expansions or replacement programs to increase reliability or end of useful life projects. Based on active projects Industrial Info is currently tracking as part of the North American Project Database, over 220 future CPI capital projects have been identified with a new tank installation, major repair or replacement.
The CPIs dependency on quality storage tanks includes the need for tanks made from a wide variety of metals, alloys and plastics in all shapes and sizes to support its daily operations. The use of storage tanks in the CPI can vary greatly depending on its application and location within the plant. Tanks used to handle corrosive materials can be fabricated from several different available metals or plastics and lined with complex coatings to extend life. Todays industrial plant owner often invests in specialized coatings for even typical carbon steel tank applications to prolong life and maintain usefulness and value.
Croda Incorporated (Mill Hall, Pennsylvania) has begun construction recently for the addition of fifteen or more new stainless steel storage tanks at its Mill Hall plant due to be complete latter this year. Croda has hired S/D Engineers Incorporated (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) as the engineer for the project and is already in the design phase of planning the addition of another six new tanks next year ranging in size from 8,000 to 14,000 gallons each. Polyone Corporation (Avon Lake, Ohio) is assembling plans for a tank farm remediation project that could require the removal and reinstallation of up to ten large 20,000 gallon tanks to replace tank pads and related infrastructure. In addition to these expansions and replacements, as many as 19 grassroot chemical plants are currently being tracked where a tank farm or the use of large tanks represent a significant portion of the project scope.
Scheduled inspections for storage tanks ranging in size from several thousand gallons to a million gallons or more represent a tremendous opportunity for equipment and service providers. The requirements for coating inspections, wall thickness and many other factors continue to become more stringent as plant safety and performance guidelines play an increasing role in the plants ability to remain profitable and compliant with regulatory requirements.
