Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Sunflower Electric Power Corporation, a subsidiary of the Mid-Kansas Electric Company LLC (Hays, Kansas) cooperative, currently has 996 megawatts (MW) of operational thermal generation capacity and is studying the addition of multiple peaking units in Kansas. Sunflower is looking at installing three to 15 8.4-MW natural-gas-fired or oil-fired Wartsila 20V34 internal combustion reciprocating engine/generator sets to provide peaking power to the grid. The utility evaluating the existing Fort Dodge Power Station in Fort Dodge, the Great Bend Power Station in Great Bend, and the Holcomb Power Station in Holcomb as possible project sites. The additional units would supply between 25.2 MW and 126 MW of additional power.
