Tampa Electric Begins Construction on $300 Million Expansion Project at Polk County Generating Station

Construction for the project started earlier this month and is scheduled to be ready for commercial start-up by the spring of 2007. The project consists of adding two 150-megawatt natural gas-fired GE Power Systems MS7001FA combustion turbines to the existing facility. The two new units will operate in a simple cycle peaking configuration, supplying power for the plant when energy demands are at there highest. Polk County has a nameplate capacity of about 493 megawatts, but once the new additions are complete, the plant will be capable of producing an additional 300 megawatts to meet the growing needs for the citizens of Polk County.

Black & Veatch Corporation (Overland, Kansas) and its subsidiary Overland Contracting, Incorporated (Conyers, Georgia) were awarded the turnkey E+P+C (engineering, procurement and construction) service contract for the project.
