Twenty-Three Chemical Processing Plants Began Operation in 2007 in the U.S.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In 2007, Industrial Info tracked 23 grassroot plant start-ups in the Chemical Processing Industry (CPI). This number is considerably lower than the original prediction of 40 new plants for the year. A portion of this decline is represented by project cancellations. At least six plants originally planned to begin operations this year were permanently canceled or indefinitely placed on hold. In most cases, the remainder of the variance is from grassroot plant projects where the start-up date has been postponed to next year or beyond.

The majority of the grassroot plants that began manufacturing operations in 2007 were in the Great Lakes, Southwest and Southeast regions of the United States. These three regions collectively represented nearly 80% of the new start-up activity. The Great Lakes region alone contained nine out of the 23 newly operational plants, with five in Illinois and two in Wisconsin.

Start-up activity hit a low during 2007 in the Northeast, West Coast and New England regions where Industrial Info identified no new plants beginning operations. This is the second consecutive year in which New England has had no grassroot plant start-ups.

Linde Gas North America LLC (Murray Hill, New Jersey) had an eventful year. Not only did the company merge BOC and Linde's corporate offices and names, it also opened three new plants in the Southeast Region.
