University of Oregon Eugene Invests $65 Million to Construct Lewis Integrative Science Building

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The University of Oregon (UO) (Eugene, Oregon) is about a year into construction on the $65 million Robert & Beverly Lewis Integrative Science Building (LISB). The university launched serious planning for the project in 2008, as part of its plan to bring multiple scientific fields together under one roof, working together on solutions for everything from human ailments to energy issues, as well as spurring new commercial endeavors.

HDR (Omaha, Nebraska), in collaboration with Thomas Hacker Architecture (Portland, Oregon), designed the five-story facility, which will house 100,000 square feet of laboratories, office and collaboration spaces. Following completion, UO will seek LEED Platinum certification, while assuring the project also meets Oregon's own set of high standards for green building and sustainability.

The LISB will host strategic research clusters composed of multiple scientific disciplines all bringing their unique perspectives to the table. Research targets will be varied, including the brain, cancer, stem cells, green nanotechnology and solar energy.

The building carries the name of Robert and Beverly Lewis of Newport Beach, California. The former UO students donated $10 million to the university in 2001 to establish the Robert and Beverly Lewis Center for Neuroimaging. Two years after Mr. Lewis' death in 2006, Beverly Lewis donated an additional $13.67 million to the school, with $10 million for the integrative science building.

Lease Crutcher Lewis (Portland, Oregon) is the general contractor for the project, which began construction in August 2010. Completion is scheduled for the fall of 2012.
