NRG Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NRG) (Houston, Texas) 3.8-gigawatt coal- and-gas-fired W A Parish Power Station in Fort Bend County, one of the U.S.' largest conventional power plants and a major power producer for the region, remains operational despite a fire that shut down the plant's 610-megawatt coal-fired Unit 08 on Sunday night.

The fire has been extinguished, but the unit remains shut down. The area has not been deemed safe enough to investigate.

"That one unit on a hot day, when all the air conditioners are running, it takes care of the needs of about 12,000 homes," David Knox, an NRG spokesman said.

The energy company was working to make sure other Houston-area plants can make up for any power loss.

This comes at a time when the National Weather Service expects record-high temperatures of 94 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit this week in the Houston area.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has not announced any impacts to the grid's power supply, and released the following statement to television station KHOU-TV: "ERCOT continues to forecast sufficient supply of power to meet demand as unseasonably high temperatures remain in place across much of Texas. ERCOT will continue to deploy all available tools to manage the grid reliably and coordinate closely with the Public Utility Commission, generation resource owners and transmission utilities to ensure they are also prepared."

No injuries were reported, and NRG said there are no environmental concerns.
