U.S. & Canadian Plants to Open Doors in 3Q06 for the Industrial Manufacturing Industry

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Plant start-ups have been on the rise within the Industrial Manufacturing Industry throughout the first two quarters of 2006 and this appears to be true once again as we enter the third quarter of the year. During the second quarter of the year, 165 new plants, representing almost 26,000 new jobs, became operational in the United States and Canada. In the third quarter, 136 plants are scheduled to open their doors, adding another 25,000 new jobs to the year’s totals. When compared to 2005’s totals of just over 240 new plants becoming operational, it becomes rapidly obvious that 2006 has already surpassed 2005’s totals with the year only being half over.

The Southeast region of the country will reign supreme during the third quarter with 32 new plants opening their doors and over 4,600 new jobs becoming available. Within the Southeast region, Florida is leading the pack with ten plants and 1,300 new jobs.

The Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States are making a strong showing in second and third place, respectively. The Great Lakes region will play host to 26 new plants (5,000 new jobs) while the Mid-Atlantic is not trailing by far with 22 new plants (4,000 jobs). The Midwest, Northeast and Southwest round out the double digit regions with thirteen new plants (1,100 jobs), twelve new plants (2,700 jobs) and eleven new plants (4,800 jobs) beginning operation during the quarter.

A trio of individual states, Ohio (1,100 jobs), Georgia (1,000 jobs), and Mississippi (1,700 jobs) are trailing Florida with eight new plants each opening during the coming quarter. Next in line is another trio with six plants each, Michigan (2,100 jobs), Minnesota (600 jobs), and North Carolina (600 jobs), followed by five states with five new plants each: New York (500 jobs), Pennsylvania (1,700 jobs), South Carolina (1,000 jobs), Texas (900 jobs) and Virginia (1,500 jobs).

All in all, 2006 has already surpassed 2005’s totals for new plants, as mentioned above. With the entire fourth quarter yet to come, this lead in new plants opening their doors should only widen. While it is still too early to make predictions as to how 2007 will shape up, early indications point to a very good year, in terms of plants becoming operational within the Industrial Manufacturing industry. This is a good sign as the jobs offered by these new plants in both 2006 and the coming years are definitely needed within an industry that has experienced announcements of major layoffs within the next three years in the automotive sector.
