U.S. Food & Beverage Industry Plans $800 Million in 4Q09 Expenditures

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--While most of the country worries about the depths of the current recession, manufacturers in the Food & Beverage Industry are forging ahead with capital expenditures at production facilities and distribution centers in the U.S. Industrial Info is currently tracking more than 70 active capital and maintenance projects in the industry that are scheduled to commence construction during the last three months of the year. Individual project values range from $500,000 and go up to $140 million. The combined total investment value (TIV) is slightly more than $800 million. Fourth-quarter estimates are in line with earlier projections that placed end-of-the-year spending at a reduced level as a result of slow economic recovery.

Construction starts will be the most active in October with 35 projects worth a little more than $450 million. Figures for November and December starts show 14 projects valued at $243 million and 22 projects worth $110 million, respectively.

The Great Lakes market region will be the most active area of the country in terms of the number of projects slated for kickoff. Of the 15 projects in the region, a 300,000-square-foot rack-supported building for the distribution of wine and spirits in Kentucky is the largest, with an estimated value of $20 million. The number of construction starts across the Midwest, Southeast, Southwest, and West Coast market regions each show 10 projects. Expenditures tied to states in the Midwest tally up to $277 million and rank the highest.

As the calendar year draws to a close, manufacturers plan to assemble budgets for 2010 with the anticipation of ramping up expenditures.
