Forty-six percent of these plants are unionized. Approximately, 25% of these plants are located in the Great Lakes Market Region.

Of these plants, about 57% fall into the Industrial Manufacturing Industry. This industry category consists of several different heavy manufacturing sectors, including automotive manufacturing and assembly complexes, textile mills, semiconductor wafer fabs, and electronics manufacturing plants to name a few. One of the largest manufacturing plants in the U.S., as far as employment is concerned, is Northrup Grumman's Shipyard in Newport News, Virginia, which employs 18,000. Boeing Company (NYSE:BA ) operates four plants in the U.S. with 10,000 or more employees. Boeing's manufacturing plant in Wichita, Kansas, which currently has about 12,500 employees, covers 1,100 acres, with twelve million square feet of covered facilities.

The second largest industry for large plants is the Food & Beverage Industry, with 266 plants representing about 18% of the plants, with more than 1,000 employees in the U.S. The largest Food & Beverage Industry plant in the U.S. is Philip Morris USA Incorporated's tobacco plant in Richmond, Virginia, which has about 8,000 employees. Anheuser-Busch Companies Incorporated's (NYSE:BUD) (Saint Louis, Missouri) Saint Louis brewery is home to 7,000 employees.

The Metals & Minerals Industry is the third on the list with 113 plants. The plant with the most employees in the Metals & Minerals Industry is Ispat Inland Incorporated's 1,900-acre Indiana Harbor steel works in East Chicago, Indiana, has about 8,000 employees.
