U.S. Mid-Atlantic Ready for Nearly $10 Billion in Fourth-Quarter Kickoffs, Led by Natural Gas Projects

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--With Hurricane Jose drifting northeast and Hurricane Maria likely to stay far out at sea, it appears the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region has little to fear, aside from some rainfall. Industrial Info is tracking more than $9.8 billion in active projects that are set to begin construction in the Mid-Atlantic region in fourth-quarter 2017, more than half of which are attributed to energy-related projects that could have faced lengthy delays from a natural disaster.

Natural gas pipelines lead all other projects, accounting for more than one-third of the total investment value (TIV). One of the leading projects is TransCanada Corporation's (NYSE:TRP) (Calgary, Alberta) Central Virginia Connector, which involves installations and modifications at three compressor stations on newest section of the company's Columbia Gas Pipeline:
  • $38 million in additions and modifications at a station in Louisa, Virginia, including the installation of a 6,130-horsepower Solar Centaur 50 turbine
  • $10 million in modifications to the Goochland station in Manakin Sabot, Virginia, including the installation of 300 feet of pipe
  • $8 million in modifications at the Boswells Tavern station in Gordonsville, Virginia
The new section on the Columbia Gas Pipeline is designed to deliver up to 45 million standard cubic feet per day from Columbia's mainline to Richmond, Virginia. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Louisa, Goochland and Boswells Tavern station projects.

Power-generation and utility projects follow pipelines in TIV, led by Duke Energy Corporation's (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) $600 million unit addition at Asheville Power Station in Arden, North Carolina. The 560-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired, combined-cycle (NGCC) addition will feature two combustion turbines and a steam turbine, all provided by General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut). For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The addition to the Asheville Power Station is ahead of schedule, but another high-profile power project, Advanced Hydro Solutions' (Fairlawn, Ohio) $38 million Jennings Randolph Dam Hydro Station in Elk Garden, West Virginia, has faced years of delays--not unusual for hydropower projects. The dam, as planned, would generate 14 MW from three generators. But the project received a boost over the summer when the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously approved a bill that would extend the deadlines for Jennings Randolph and four other U.S. hydropower projects by several years. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Transportation-related projects account for more than $750 million of the TIV, including two parts-and-accessories plants in western North Carolina: Continental AG's (Hanover, Germany) $41 million anti-lock brake plant in Morgantown, and GKN plc's (Redditch, England) $28.8 million drive-shaft plant in Mebane. Continental plans to expand its facility 75% to 350,000 square feet to increase production of its new MK C1 Regenerative Braking System, while GKN expects to boost capacity and efficiency with new machinery. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the anti-lock brake and drive-shaft projects.
