Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The newly completed, 335-megawatt (MW) powerhouse addition at Waneta Dam, which is located on the Pend d' Oreille River in British Columbia, began commercial operations last month. The facility is owned by Waneta Expansion Limited Partnership, a joint venture including Fortis Incorporated (St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador) (51%), Columbia Power Corporation (Castlegar, British Columbia) (32.5%) and Columbia Basin Trust (Castlegar) (16.5%).
The addition, which has a total investment value of $900 million, took about five years to construct. Located just downstream of an existing dam, the facility generates power from water that otherwise would be spilled.
Columbia Power managed the construction of this project on behalf of the owners. The addition uses two Francis turbines. SNC-Lavalin (Montreal, Quebec) designed the project. Fortis will operate and maintain the facility.
