Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held biodiesel distributor Whole Energy Fuels Corporation (Bellingham, Washington) has received local city approval to move forward on a new waste grease biodiesel production plant in Pacifica, California. The plant will be the first of its kind to be located at the city's existing wastewater treatment plant and will pull feedstocks from regional restaurants and the public in hopes of eliminating waste grease out of the city's wastewater stream that causes equipment failure at the wastewater treatment plant.

The company will pick up waste grease for free in containers provided by the company and take it back to the processing plant to be turned into biodiesel. Plans are to collect more than 3 million gallons of waste grease per year, and the plant will have the capacity of producing 3 million gallons per year of biodiesel.

After local and state approvals are in place, construction on the plant could start as early as this spring. The company is talking with contractors to build the plant but have yet to sign a contract with a builder.

The plant will be located at the city's Calera Creek wastewater treatment plant in Pacifica where a small cogeneration unit is planned for construction in another project to provide electricity for the wastewater plant and the biodiesel manufacturing facility.

Construction costs to build the plant are in the $3 million range.

Biodiesel production in California has been gaining interest in the environmentally conscious state. Six operational plants in the state have the capacity of producing more than 75 million gallons of the renewable fuel annually. Additional plants are being developed in Fresno, Stockton, West Sacramento, Bakersfield, El Centro and Oakland.
