Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Minneapolis-based Xcel Energy Incorporated (NYSE:XEL) has the green light to begin construction on North America's biggest single-phase windfarm. The proposed 600-megawatt (MW) Rush Creek Windfarm project in Colorado is slated to begin construction in May 2017.
Xcel Energy recently awarded M.A. Mortenson Company (Minneapolis) to serve as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for Rush Creek. Mortenson will be responsible for hiring subcontractors through the duration this project.
The windfarm will span Arapahoe, Cheyenne, Elbert, Kit Carson, and Lincoln counties in Colorado and will use 300 Vestas 2-MW turbines. Once completed, the windfarm will be capable of generating enough renewable energy to power more than 300,000 homes in Colorado.
This project has a total investment of $1 billion, which could rise during the construction phase. The Rush Creek Wind project will employ more than 500 craft workers at the peak of construction and provide 20 permanent jobs for the area.
