Researched by Protel Associates Limited in alliance with Industrial Info Europe (Galway, Ireland)--Global chemical company, Yara Industrial Limited (Immingham, England), has constructed a $37.8 million (£23 million) carbon dioxide (CO2) liquefaction plant on land adjacent to the Ensus I bioethanol plant currently under construction at Wilton Works in Teesside, United Kingdom.
The plant, which is the largest carbon capture plant in the U.K., is mechanically complete and will be commissioned when the Ensus bioethanol production process becomes operational during the third quarter of 2009. For details on the Ensus I project see May 4, 2009, news article - U.K.'s Largest Ethanol Plant to Start This Summer, Ensus I Will Be Europe's Largest Producer. K Home International Limited (Thornaby, United Kingdom) is managing the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for Yara.
Yara, a business segment of Yara International ASA (OSL:YAR) (Oslo, Norway), operates CO2 production plants in Cleveland, Cheshire and Avon in the U.K. and also operates an import/export terminal in Teesside with access to European markets.
The CO2 plant will have an annual liquid capacity of 250,000 tons, allowing Yara to continuously supply customers in the U.K. with CO2. The Ensus plant will produce enough bioethanol to meet about one third of the U.K.'s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation, which requires all petrol sold in the U.K. to contain 2.5% biofuel, rising to 5% in 2010.
The Ensus bioethanol production process will supply raw CO2 off-gas, containing fermentation off-gases, trace hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters and water to Yara's carbon dioxide liquefaction plant. The off-gas will be purified via a scrubbing stage followed by cryogenic separation.
The $410 million (£249 million) Ensus I bioethanol project is being developed by Ensus Limited (Yarm, England), owned by U.S. private equity funds The Carlyle Group (Washington, D.C.) and Riverstone Holdings LLC (New York, New York). Simon Carves Limited (Cheadle, England) is managing the EPC for Ensus. The plant will produce 400 million liters (105 million U.S. gallons) of bioethanol annually from 1.2 million metric tons of wheat feedstock. The facility will also generate 350,000 tons of high-protein animal feeds and 300,000 tons of CO2 per year.
Ensus is conducting a site study to build the Ensus II bioethanol plant in mainland Europe.
