Societe Nationale de Raffinage Progresses with Refinery Expansion in Cameroon

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Societe National de Raffinage (SONARA) is progressing with plans for a two-phase expansion of the company's refinery in Limbe, Cameroon. The company has chosen Foster Wheeler France (Paris, France) to serve as engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the project.

Civil construction is expected to begin in late 2010, and mechanical and electrical work is expected to begin in late 2011. Construction is expected to be complete in late 2012.

SONARA is planning to expand its crude unit from 45,000 barrels per day (BBL/d) to 69,000 BBL/d in the first phase. In addition, the company is planning to install a new vacuum distillation unit, an 11,000-BBL/d reformer, and supporting offsite utilities. In the second phase, SONARA is planning to construct a 15,000- to 20,000-BBL/d hydrocracker, hydrogen unit and supporting sulfur recovery unit. Construction for the second phase is expected to begin by late 2013. The construction is planned for completion by late 2015.

SONARA was established in 1976. The refinery mainly processes light Nigerian crude oil and Cameroon Kole by blending it with Equatorial Guinean Alba condensate, and mainly supplies crude oil refined products for the domestic market. The company exports an estimated 500,000 metric tons per year of refined products to the international markets.
