GALWAY, IRELAND--April 24, 2015 --Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) Construction of Turkey's first nuclear power plant (NPP) has gotten underway following an official ground-breaking ceremony at the Akkuyu plant in Mersin on the Mediterranean coast.

Turkish Energy Minister, Taner Yıldız and Sergey Kirienko, Rosatom's director general, laid a foundation stone to mark the start of works which will see the construction of a 4,800-megawatt (MW) plant at a cost of around $22 billion.
