Hoosier Energy Performs $55 Million Life Extension Upgrades at Indiana Coal-Fired Power Plant

Hoosier Energy Rural Electric Cooperative (Hoosier Energy REC) (Bloomington, Indiana) is completing a two-year life extension program to upgrade and refurbish two 540-megawatt (MW) units during separate 60-plus day outages at the Mermon Power Station in Sullivan, Indiana. Merom Station’s coal-fired Units 01 and 02 both have Riley Stoker coal opposed-fired boilers that provide steam to drive two 540 MW Siemens Westinghouse turbine/generator sets.

Hoosier Energy REC completed a $25 million outage on Merom 01 last spring that consisted of replacing boiler tube panels and a generator rewind, in addition to normal maintenance on the balance of the boiler, turbine and auxiliary equipment. Environmental work conducted in Spring 2006 included replacing low NOx burner nozzles, scrubber module lining modifications, and stack liner modifications.

Hoosier Energy REC is currently undergoing a $30 million 60-plus day outage on Merom 02 scheduled for completion in May. The Merom 02 outage consists of replacing boiler tube panels and replacing analog controls with digital controls to improve performance and reliability. The list of repairs includes boiler feed water pumps, low NOx burner, as well as burner management control modifications, and normal maintenance on the balance of the boiler, turbine, and auxiliary equipment. Merom 02 is also having the catalyst replaced in the selective catalytic reduction unit to help maintain low nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions in addition to limestone tower mill repairs to maintain low sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions.
