Western New York Energy Plans First Corn Grind Today on First Northeast Ethanol Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Investor-owned ethanol start-up Western New York Energy (Medina, New York), is taking in corn and planning its first corn grind today on what will be the Northeast region's first operational fuel ethanol plant. The plant rose from the ground in 17 months under the direction of build team ICM Incorporated (Colwich, Kansas) and Fagen Incorporated (Granite Falls, Minnesota).

The ethanol plant will have the capacity of producing 50 million gallons per year of the renewable fuel and will process 20 million bushels of locally grown corn annually. The plant will also generate 100,000 pounds per year of carbon dioxide and 88,000 tons of dry and 240,000 tons of wet distillers grains annually.

The $90 million plant is situated in upstate New York in Medina about 33 miles northeast of Buffalo in Livingston County. Once the plant starts grinding corn, batches of ethanol will begin flowing from the plant early next week.

Only one other ethanol plant is currently under construction in New York. Northeast Biofuels located in the former Miller brewery in Fulton has targeted February 2008 as the start-up date for its plant. This plant will have an annual production capacity of 100 million gallons per year when completed.

Nine additional New York plants are in the pre-construction phase and will be located in Middletown, Romulus, Buffalo, Caledonia, Rochester, Ogdensburg, Lyons Falls, Fort Covington and Tonawanda.
