India Raises Power Target to 90,000 Megawatts for Eleventh Five-Year Plan

BANGALORE, INDIA--September 23, 2008--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Indian government has revised its target of additional power generation during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period (2007-12) to 90,000 megawatts (MW) from the previous figure of 78,577 MW. The 11,423-MW hike was made to meet the rapidly increasing demand for power in the country. A major share of the additional capacity generation will come from the nine proposed ultra-mega-power projects (UMPP), each of which will generate a minimum of 4,000 MW. Tata Power Company Limited (BOM:500400) (Mumbai) has bagged a contract for a UMPP in Mundra, Gujarat, and Reliance Power Limited (BOM:532939) (Mumbai) will implement UMPPs in Sasan, Madhya Pradesh; and Krishnapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
