FPL Energy Starts Up $170 Million Iowa Windfarm

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--FPL Energy LLC (Juno Beach, Florida), a subsidiary of FPL Group Incorporated (NYSE:FPL) (Juno Beach), has begun full commercial operation of the first phase of the $170 million, 101-megawatt (MW) Crystal Lake Windfarm in Hancock County near Britt, Iowa.

Construction began in October 2007 and was completed this summer. FPL began commercial operation of the first phase of the project at the end of September. The project consisted of constructing 67 1.5-MW GE Energy sle wind turbine generators in several locations and stretching over 24 square miles. The new facility will provide renewable power to 44,000 homes in Hancock County. The second phase of the project is scheduled to be complete by the end of this year and will produce an additional 200 MW of power, bringing the facility's total capacity to 300 MW.
