Enel to Build 90-Megawatt Windfarm in Sicily

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) (Rome, Italy) plans to build and operate a $160 million, 90-megawatt (MW) windfarm near Portoscuso in the region of Sicily. Enel Power SpA (Rome) will handle the construction and development of the power facilities.

Enel is currently awaiting approval of an integrated environmental assessment, which was submitted to Italy's Ministry of Environment and the government of Sicily in March. Construction kickoff is expected for the first quarter of 2009 once approval is granted. The company signed a contract on October 15 with Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) for 39 2.3-MW wind turbine/generators. Delivery is planned for the fourth quarter of 2009, with installation completion set for the first quarter of 2010.

The project is part of Enel's programme agreement signed with the city of Portoscuso to implement new industrial initiatives designed to foster the area's economic development. Enel's role will be to develop renewable resources, mainly by exploiting the city's wind energy potential, and by installing photovoltaic and thermal solar panels on municipal buildings.

Enel, a major Italian utility, also recently created a renewable energy division, which includes mini-hydro, solar, geothermal and wind activities in Italy and abroad with a total installed capacity of 4,300 MW. The goal for the division is to double the installed capacity over a five-year span.
