Air Products Pours Capital into U.S., Canadian Hydrogen Growth

Providing insights into the ever-changing landscape of the industrial marketplace

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial gas producer Air Products and Chemicals Incorporated (NYSE:APD) (Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania) continues to benefit from the growing industrial demand for hydrogen. The company is among the first in its sector to invest heavily in North American "green" and "blue" hydrogen development, and is at work on some of the highest-capacity projects in the market. Industrial Info is tracking more than $9.7 billion worth of active projects from Air Products across the U.S. and Canada, about 70% of which is attributed to grassroot projects.

One of the company's most ambitious projects is a joint venture with AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) (Arlington County, Virginia) to develop a "mega-scale" green hydrogen plant in Walbarger County, Texas, which would be the largest green hydrogen plant in the U.S. The complex, which would be built on the site of a former coal-fired power plant, is designed to produce 200 metric tons per day via electrolyzers, which would be powered by solar and wind-energy facilities managed by AES.

Air Products executives say incentives from 2022's Inflation Reduction Act significantly enhanced the project's odds of success. The mega-scale project will satisfy a "growing demand for zero-carbon intensity fuels for the mobility market, as well as other industrial markets," company officials said in a press release. Air Products started site preparation toward the end of last year on a $100 million plant in Casa Grande, Arizona, which is expected to produce 10 tons per day of liquefied green hydrogen, which the company will sell to the transportation market in California and the surrounding region. It is expected to be online in the spring of 2024. Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's detailed project report.

"These projects have gained significant government support around the world, and many companies have since followed our lead and want to become a hydrogen company, announcing large clean hydrogen projects and exploring ammonia dissociation innovation," said Seifi Ghasemi, the chief executive officer of Air Products, in a recent earnings-related conference call.

Air Products also is weighing a proposal to build a green hydrogen plant in Massena, New York, which would produce 35 metric tons per day and include distribution and dispensing operations. Product from the facility would be sold to the mobility market in New York State, according to the company. The project's odds improved last month when the St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency (Canton, New York) announced it would work with Air Products to obtain tax breaks, according to the Watertown Daily Times. In January, Air Products kicked off site preparation for its US$1 billion net-zero hydrogen energy complex in Edmonton, Alberta. The facility aims to produce 1,500 metric tons per day of "blue" hydrogen, which uses natural gas as a feedstock, but captures and sequesters the carbon emissions. The project, which includes a hydrogen-fueled power plant, is expected to wrap up toward the end of 2025 and supply an Imperial Oil Limited (Calgary, Alberta) renewable diesel complex. It got a boost in November, when Canadian federal and provincial governments together awarded it about US$355 million in project funding. Subscribers can learn more in a detailed project report.

"Our customers are asking for blue hydrogen, and we are considering converting some of our existing methane reformers, putting carbon capture on them and providing blue hydrogen to our customers," Ghasemi said in the earnings call.

Along the Texas Gulf Coast, a haven for chemical industry development, Air Products is constructing at least three major projects, one of which is set to finish construction this summer: a $500 million SMR/ASU plant in Texas City, which will supply Gulf Coast Ammonia LLC's (Texas City) $950 million ammonia plant nearby, also under construction, with hydrogen produced via a steam methane reformer (SMR) and nitrogen produced via an air separation unit (ASU). Gulf Coast Ammonia's project is set to wrap up toward the end of this year. Subscribers can learn more from detailed project reports on the SMR/ASU plant and ammonia plant.

Air Products also is preparing to finish construction toward the end of this year on its $60 million hydrogen-purification plant at its Cedar Bayou complex in Baytown, Texas, which began construction in March, and expects to finish construction next spring on its $194.1 million natural gas-to-hydrogen unit addition at its industrial gas plant in La Porte, Texas. The Cedar Bayou plant will process hydrogen-rich waste into product that will be sold and distributed through a regional pipeline system, while the La Porte facility is expected to produce 33 million standard cubic feet per day of hydrogen and 18 million standard cubic feet per day of carbon monoxide. Subscribers can learn more from detailed project reports on the Cedar Bayou and La Porte projects.
