Costa Rica: El Diquis Hydro Power Plant to Begin Constructions in 2013

Researched by Industrial Info Latin America (Córdoba, Argentina)--Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) (San Jose, Costa Rica) will begin construction of El Diquis hydropower plant in April 2013.

The facility, which is near the city of Buenos Aires de Puntarenas, will be equipped with four 163-megawatt (MW) hydro-turbines and will produce 652 MW of clean energy.

The estimated total investment value of the project $1.8 billion. The project is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2017.

Construction of the project will require the building of access roads and the relocation of the native communities living in the region, who will be displaced by the construction of the dam. The dam will affect approximately 16,840 acres (26 square miles). Three high-voltage transmission lines will also need to be constructed to transport power.

At the moment, the project is being studied for design, and social and environmental impact in order to complete the feasibility and final environmental impact studies. El Diquis is the largest hydropower project in Central America and will ensure the availability of electricity from renewable sources to Costa Rica for many years.

ICE is the most important energy operator in Costa Rica, with 2,400 MW installed since 1949. The company provides electricity, cellular telephone connections and internet service.
