Eldorado Brasil Plans Expansion of South America's Biggest Pulp Mill

The project involves the initial construction of a 1.5 million-ton-per-year pulp facility that is expected to be operational by the end of this year. Once the mill has started operations, company officials plan an expansion valued at approximately $3.22 billion. This expansion consists of the addition of two new lines of production to be developed in two phases. The first phase will double the mill´s capacity to 3 millon tons per year and will be completed in 2017. The second phase is planned for 2021 and will increase the total production capacity to 5 million tons per year of kraft pulp.

There are three main companies that have been awarded contracts for this project. Pöyry Tecnologia Ltda (Vantaa, Finland) was in charge of the pre-engineering, detailed engineering, and the site preparation for mill infrastructure. Metso (Helsinki, Finland) supplied some equipment for the production process of the pulp mill, such as a new recovery boiler and evaporation plant. Andritz Pulp and Paper (Graz, Austria) had an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to provide 70% of the plant's equipment (dryers, washers, pulper, woodyard and other equipment and facilities).

The Tres Lagoas pulp mill is located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Its current capacity will be 1.5 millon tons per year of bleached eucalyptus kraft, but the design capacity of the facility is 5 millon tonnes per year. The plant will use wood from eucalyptus forests, a 100% renewable source, as raw material. The pulp will be exported to paper-producing markets in North America, Europe and Asia.
