Abu Dhabi to Build Combined-Cycle Plant in Shuweihat
Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority is working with Fichtner GmbH & Company KG (Stuttgart, Germany) to develop Phase III of the Shuweihat Power Station.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA) (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates), an organization wholly owned by the government of Abu Dhabi that replaced the Water & Electricity Department in 1998, is planning the development of Phase III of the Shuweihat Power Station. Currently, ADWEA is working with Fichtner GmbH & Company KG (Stuttgart, Germany) to develop the project scope, but plans to conclude business sometime next April. After approval, ADWEA will begin the turnkey selection process.
Abu Dhabi's ninth power project since 1998 will begin construction next October. Phase III of the Shuweihat Power Station, unlike the previous eight independent water and power projects that produce 12,000 megawatts (MW) and 800 gallons of water per day, will simply be an independent power project. To reduce costs, a water desalinization unit will not be included in construction. Because the demand for water and power is expected to increase almost 8% by 2020, Abu Dhabi is implementing many grassroot power projects. ADWEA opened bidding for Shuweihat III in March and plans to select a developer by November.
ADWEA plans to construct a natural gas-fired, combined-cycle, Phase III plant in the Shuweihat Industrial Zone, which is approximately 200 kilometers from Abu Dhabi. The US$2 billion Phase III plant will utilize four 287-MW combustion-turbine generators, coupled with heat recovery steam generators, which will, in turn, drive two 176-MW steam turbine generator sets. When completed in the second quarter of 2014, Phase III of the Shuweihat Power Station is expected to have a production capacity of 1,500 MW, to be supplied to the local grid.
