Associated Electric Continues Environmental Upgrade at Thomas Hill Plant in Missouri

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Associated Electric Cooperative (Springfield, Missouri) aims to complete an environmental controls retrofit project at the three-unit Thomas Hill Energy Center (Clifton Hill, Missouri) by the end of this year.

The 1,153-megawatt (MW) sub-bituminous-coal-fired power plant in Randolph County is composed of three units that became operational in 1966. The three units include one General Electric and two Siemens Westinghouse tandem-compound steam turbine/generators, with three Babcock & Wilcox cyclone/opposed-fired boilers.

Major modifications and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system were installed on the 670 MW Unit 3 during a 130-day outage that ended earlier this spring. The unit is also equipped with low-NOx burners and overfired-air ports. The same system is currently being installed on the 303 MW Unit 2.

Lastly, Unit 1 is scheduled for a five-six week outage in October, with completion expected at the end of 2008. New low-NOx burners and air heaters will also be installed, along with modifications to the electrostatic precipitator (ESP).

Interfab Incorporated (Cincinnati, Ohio) will perform the installation, along with most of the mechanical and electrical tasks.
