Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Renewable energy firm Avangrid Incorporated (NYSE:AGR) (Orange, Connecticut) announced that it has begun commercial operations of its largest solar farm to date near Mart, Texas. The plant joins several operational Avangrid plants throughout the U.S. as well as those under construction or in the planning stages.
Construction on the True North solar farm kicked off in 2023. Late last week, Avangrid announced that it had commenced commercial operations at the plant, which generates 238 megawatts (MW). The plant is the largest solar facility in Avangrid's portfolio. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.
Virtually since the time construction commenced, the plant has been backed by a power purchase agreement with Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California), which is constructing a data center in nearby Temple, Texas. General contractor JE Dunn Construction Group (Kansas City, Missouri) commenced construction on Phase I of the data center in mid-2022 and is expected to wrap up the first 450,000-square-foot structure by the end of this year. Construction on a second phase has already begun and is expected to be completed next year. A third phase of construction (out of a total of seven planned) could be in service by the end of next year, although Meta appears to be re-evaluating its data center construction plans across the nation as artificial intelligence technologies gain prominence and evolve technologically. Meta paused construction early in Phase I before commencing again after a redesign. Shortly before commencing construction of the solar farm, Avangrid signed a supply agreement with Array Technologies Incorporated (NASDAQ:ARRY) (Albuquerque, New Mexico) for Array's solar trackers, which the plant uses. Array is building a new manufacturing plant in Albuquerque, a 216,000-square-foot structure on the west side of the city that is expected to begin operations by the end of this year, creating 100 new jobs. The True North solar plant joins billions of dollars of underway and potential Avangrid projects in the U.S., not least of which is the 800-MW Vineyard offshore wind project, which is about halfway through construction. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the related project reports.
The company's portfolio includes both solar and wind power projects. Among these is the Pontotoc County Windfarm near Roff, Oklahoma. Construction on this facility is expected to begin in the coming months and entails erecting 33 turbines, each rated at 4.5 MW, to provide aggregate generation of about 150 MW. Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor M.A. Mortenson Company (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is expected to wrap up the project next summer. Avangrid solar farms under construction include the Powell Creek photovoltaic plant in Putnam County, Ohio. EPC company PAR Electrical Contractors LLC (Kansas City) commenced construction in the first half of last year, beginning the installation of approximately 380,000 solar panels. Work on the 150-MW plant is expected to wrap up this summer. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
