Bechtel Prepares to Construct 750-Megawatt Power Plant Unit in Kentucky

Bechtel Power Corporation (Frederick, Maryland), a subsidiary of Bechtel Corporation, was selected by E.ON US (Louisville, Kentucky), a subsidiary of E.ON AG (NYSE:EON) (Frankfort, Germany), to build a new 750-megawatt (MW) coal-fired unit 02 at the Trimble County Power Station near Bedford, Kentucky. Trimble County currently has a 566 MW coal unit and six 171 MW natural gas/oil-fired combustion turbine/generators for a total of 1,592 megawatts.

Trimble County 02 is going to be a 750 MW base load addition that will bring the station’s total capacity to over 2,300 megawatts. Bechtel is going to be installing a Mitsui Babcock Energy, Limited (Crawley, United Kingdom) pulverized coal supercritical boiler. Bechtel has signed Wheelabrator Air Pollution Control, Incorporated (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) for a state-of-the-art air quality controls system (ACQS) that will allow the unit to be one of the cleanest coal plants of its size. The AQCS will have an activated carbon system for mercury control, a wet electrostatic precipitator (ESP) to control acid mist and particulate mater plus a wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubber to control sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. The final piece of major equipment to be installed will be the steam turbine/generator set provided by Hitachi, Limited (OTC:HT) (Tokyo, Japan). Construction is scheduled to kick off in July of this year and commercial operation is scheduled to commence in the spring of 2010.
