Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL) (Calgary, Alberta) recently inked a long-term gas-supply agreement with Cheniere Energy Incorporated (Houston, Texas), capping a highly productive start to 2025 that saw the Canadian producer hit quarterly records for liquids, natural gas and oil sands mining. Industrial Info is tracking more than US$28 billion worth of active and proposed projects worldwide from CNRL, more than half of which is attributed to plant expansions.

"In the first quarter of 2025, we achieved record quarterly production of approximately 1.58 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (BOE/d), which included record quarterly liquids production of approximately 1.17 million barrels per day (BBL/d)--79% of which was long-life, low-decline production--and record quarterly natural gas production of 2,451 million standard cubic feet per day," said Scott Stauth, the president of CNRL, in a recent quarterly earnings-related press release.
Some of CNRL's future natural gas output just found a new customer: One of the company's subsidiaries agreed to sell 140,000 million British thermal units per day to Cheniere for a term of 15 years, which is expected to commence in 2030. Cheniere will use the product to develop about 850,000 tonnes per annum of liquefied natural gas (LNG); it will pay CNRL an LNG-linked price for the natural gas, after deductions for fixed LNG-shipping costs and a fixed liquefaction fee, according to Cheniere.
The deal is only valid if Cheniere makes a positive final investment decision (FID) for a proposed expansion of its Sabine Pass Liquefaction Plant in Cameron, Louisiana, which is designed to double the facility's output to 14 million metric tons per year of LNG. Other recent developments in CNRL's natural gas and NGL business include a pair of drilling programs and gathering field upgrades southeast of Grande Prairie, Alberta: a US$115 million development at the South Karr Creek Field, which involves drilling at least 14 wells, and an US$80 million development at the Gold Creek Field, which involves at least 17 wells. Both projects involve reworking existing wells and upgrading the gathering systems. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the South Karr and Gold Creek projects.
CNRL also is seeing major movement in its crude oil developments. In a May 8 quarterly earnings-related conference call, Stauth said CNRL moved an oil-sands well pad from its Kirby development in eastern Alberta to its nearby Wolf Lake-Primrose development earlier this year, following strong results from CNRL's latest cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) pad at Wolf Lake-Primrose. CSS pads use a well bore to inject and produce steam in Canada's heavy oil sands areas.
At its 140,000-BBL/d Wolf Lake bitumen processing plant and gathering field, CNRL is building out US$45 million worth of steel transmission pipe to transport fuel gas, diluted bitumen and steam about 40 to 50 miles. The project includes the replacement of some aging segments. CNRL also is seeking permits for a proposed well-pad addition at its Primrose South Bitumen Production Plant, which would involve up to 18 new dual-horizontal production well pairs. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Wolf Lake and Primrose projects.
