Clean Burn Fuels Plans Fall Construction for North Carolina’s First Fuel Ethanol Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held Clean Burn Fuels LLC (Raleigh, North Carolina), has received a $35 million federal loan guarantee from the Agriculture Department’s Rural Business Enterprise Program, paving the way for a possible fall ’07 construction start on what will be the first commercial-scale fuel ethanol plant to be built in North Carolina.

The company has secured its state air quality and anticipates that construction will start in October or November. The plant will be in Raeford, positioned in the heart of North Carolina’s hog, turkey and poultry belt. The location will provide a great geographical market for the distiller’s dried-grain by-product, which is used as a feed additive.

Plans call for the creation of a 60 million-gallon-per-year fuel ethanol plant that will process more than 23 million bushels of locally grown corn annually. Some 540,000 tons of distillers dried grains will also be generated at the site annually.

The plant will utilize Katzen’s (Cincinnati, Ohio) licensed ethanol process technology and Diversified Piping Systems LLC (Greer, South Carolina) will act as the general contractor. Construction on the $106 million plant is expected to take 14 to 6 months to complete.

Four additional fuel ethanol plants are in the pre-construction phase in North Carolina.
