Sources at the plant say that the outage will last less than one week. With summer temperatures steadily rising, plant personnel said they believed it was the best time to bring the unit offline. Avoiding a forced outage in the middle of the summer, when power is needed most, makes more economic sense and prevents high-cost replacement power for the region.
With a safer planned shut-down and return, the unit is expected to have a smoother, less complicated summer-run season.
The plant underwent a re-fueling outage earlier this winter, and upgraded and replaced several components. A piece of metal was found lodged in the reactor vessel, but it did not affect the length of the outage or the operations of the unit. Entergy is the second-largest nuclear generator in the U.S. It owns and operates approximately 30,000 megawatts of capacity.
