Cote D'Ivoire to Build its Second Refinery

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The foundation for Cote D'Ivoire's second oil refinery was laid in mid-November in Abidjan, the country's economic capital. The refinery will help to ease the oil-refining problem for oil-producing countries in western and central Africa. Oil products from this refinery will also supply the U.S.

The refinery will be built by US Energy Allied International (Houston, Texas), WCW International (Houston, Texas) and Cote D'Ivoire's national oil company Petroci. The $1.56 billion refinery will be at Vridi Industrial Park in the southern suburb of Abidjan, taking up an area of 400 hectares.

Cote D'Ivoire's current oil refinery is its largest industrial enterprise. In 2002, production at this refinery had already reached 10 million tons. Through the adoption of new technology, it became western Africa's largest oil refinery. Products from this refinery are not only sold to western coastal African countries but also Europe, the U.S. and some Asian countries.

According to Petroci's President Kassoum Fadika, construction on the refinery will take up to three years. Upon completion, the processing capacity of the refinery will be 60,000 barrels a day, or 3 million barrels a year, of crude oil. It will provide improved service to the areas of Angola, Nigeria, Congo (Kinshasa) and alleviate the refining-capacity shortage in western Africa.

An earlier report from the West African Economic and Monetary Union indicates that the daily oil production in Cote D'Ivoire in 2006 was 80,000 barrels; oil exports brought Cote D'Ivoire $3.36 billion of revenue. It is the largest oil-producing country among the eight West African Economic and Monetary Union countries. The current working capacity at Cote D'Ivoire's only refinery, Société Ivoirienne de Raffinage, is 70,000 barrels a day.
