Global demand for dissolving pulp is increasing 5% per year, according to international consulting and engineering firm Poyry. Brazil and Chile are the biggest pulp producers in Latin America, and companies in both countries are developing projects to meet this future demand.
Brazil's Bracell is the only current producer of this kind of pulp in Latin America, but Duratex and Leinzing recently created a joint venture to build a dissolving pulp mill in Minas Gerais, Brazil, with a planned investment of $1 billion. In Chile, Arauco is completing a $250 million conversion of an existing paper mill, with plans to start producing dissolving pulp this December.
