Domtar Awards Jacobs Engineering Contract to Reconfigure Plymouth Paper Mill

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Domtar Corporation (NYSE:UFS) (Montreal, Quebec) will transition the company's paper manufacturing operations in Plymouth, North Carolina, to produce fluff pulp. The plans, announced earlier this month, were in the making for nearly a year, but were confidential and therefore kept under wraps. Key elements of the $73.5 million investment include the rebuild and conversion of the NC-5 paper machine to a fluff pulp machine and converting the hardwood fiberline to softwood (pine). Site preparation and some construction activities will commence this winter, with startup slated for late 3Q10. At the conclusion of the project, Domtar anticipates company-wide fluff pulp production will increase to 440,000 metric tons.

The NC-5 paper machine is a Beloit Twin-Wire Bel-Baie fourdrinier with 330-inch width and 300-inch trim that runs at about 3,200 feet per minute. The conversion of the machine will remove nearly 200,000 tons of uncoated free-sheet from the market. The current hardwood and softwood pulping lines have a combined annual output of 486,000 tons.

Jacobs Engineering Group (NYSE:JEC) (Pasadena, California) through its offices in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Greenville, South Carolina, has completed nearly 80% of the engineering and is working with the project owner on contractor selection.
