Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Hydro Tasmania (Tasmania, Australia) has launched the 168-megawatt (MW) Musselroe windfarm in Australia. It will supply power to as many as 50,000 homes in the northern Tasmanian region. Construction of the $394 million project began in December 2011.
The windfarm is located 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of Launceston in Tasmania. Major construction was completed in April 2013, and the windfarm has been producing power on a limited basis since then. With the official launch on January 15, all 56 turbines of the windfarm are up and running.
The Musselroe project was built under the supervision of Entura, which is part of Hydro Tasmania and Consolidated Power Projects Australia Pty Limited (Adelaide, Australia), which was chosen as the major contractor.
The Musselroe windfarm features 3-MW V90 Vestas turbines, and is operated by Woolnorth Windfarm Holdings Pty limited, which is a joint venture formed in 2012 between Shenhua Clean Energy Pty Limited (SCE) and Hydro Tasmania.
Woolnorth Windfarm operates two more windfarms in northwest Tasmania, at Studland Bay and Bluff Point. SCE owns a 75% share in the windfarms, and Hydro Tasmania retains 25% in each.
Along with the turbine supply contract, Hydro Tasmania has signed a 10-year, full-scope operations and maintenance service agreement with Vestas Australian Wind Technology Pty Limited (Melbourne Australia) to operate the Musselroe windfarm.
In addition to Musselroe, Vestas operates and maintains the 75-MW Studland Bay windfarm, which features 25 V90 turbines of 3 MW each, and the 64.75-MW Bluff Point windfarm, which consists of 37 V66 turbines of 1.75 MW each. The agreement with Vestas covers all safety, operational, performance and financial requirements under current warranty, operations and maintenance agreements. Vestas had renewed its agreement for Studland Bay windfarm after the five-year term expired in 2012.
