India's Aluminum Sector Expands to Meet Increasing Demand

Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--On a global basis, India ranks sixth for alumina production, eighth for aluminum production and fifth for aluminum consumption. India's Power Industry consumes 40% of the country's aluminum and is the leading consumer of the metal. However, growing industrial sectors such as automobiles and construction are expected to boost the country's domestic aluminum consumption.

Big players such as Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (Balco) (New Delhi); Palco Metals Limited (Ahmedabad, Gujarat); Hindalco Industries Limited (BSE:500440) (Mumbai); National Aluminium Company Limited (Nalco) (BSE:532234) (Bhubaneswar, Orissa); and Vedanta Resources Limited (LSE:VED) (London, England) have been ramping up production capacity every year as the demand for aluminum increases. Hindalco has planned $5.78 billion in capital expenditure to increase the company's aluminum production capacity to 1.6 million metric tons by 2011-12.

Palco Recycle Industries Limited (Ahmedabad) is setting up a new plant that will produce a combined 18,000 tons per year of aluminum wire, aluminum alloys and aluminum conductors. The completion of the plant is scheduled for late 2011.
