India's NTPC to Float Tenders for Nine Boilers and Turbines

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--India's largest power generating company, NTPC Limited (BSE:532555) (New Delhi), will begin the process of bulk purchasing nine 800-megawatt (MW) boiler-turbine units by the end of September 2010 and complete the bidding by March 2011.

NTPC has decided to increase the template capacity of bulk procurement of boilers and turbines to 800 MW from its previous purchase of 660 MW. Earlier, the company had scrapped the tender for procuring 11 660-MW boilers and has begun the re-tendering process, which is expected to be completed in the next two months. The nine units will be used for various NTPC projects for which vendors and suppliers are being sought.

An official at NTPC said: "We have sought government approval for the purchase, and it is expected shortly. The notice inviting global bidders for the nine 800-MW units will be issued by September, and we hope to complete the bidding process by March 2011. NTPC has started placing bulk orders for boilers and turbines, unlike earlier when orders were placed project-wise. Bulk orders enable us to get more competitive terms for our purchases." The official did not divulge the estimated value of the nine boiler and turbines.

NTPC's current power generating capacity is 31,500 MW. The company is targeting increasing this to 45,000 MW by 2011-12. As per its corporate plan, the company is targeting a generating capacity of 75,000 MW by 2017.

The company is also looking at acquiring equity in coal blocks overseas. NTPC officials said the company currently imports about 15 million tons of coal to meet its requirements. This is projected to increase to 25 million tons over the next four years.
