Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Other than bordering the Gulf of Mexico with well-established port infrastructure, what do Brazoria County, Texas, and Cameron Parish, Louisiana, have in common? They lead in U.S. industrial projects under construction, based on total investment value.

Companies are constructing $23.4 billion worth of projects in Cameron Parish and $21.5 billion worth of projects in Brazoria County, according to Industrial Info's North American Industrial Project Database. These companies include Cheniere Energy (NYSE:LNG) (Houston, Texas); Dow Chemical (NYSE:DOW) (Michigan, Michigan); Freeport LNG Development, a subsidiary of ConocoPhillips Company (NYSE:COP) (Houston); Formosa Plastics Corporation USA (Livingston, New Jersey); and Sempra LNG, a unit of Sempra Energy (NYSE:SRE) (San Diego, California).

If you couldn't tell from the company names, the majority of the industrial project activity in Brazoria County and Cameron Parish is for hydrocarbon processing or downstream petrochemical processing. There has been a boom of activity along the Gulf Coast as companies endeavor to capitalize on abundant, low-cost natural gas.

Brazoria County is currently the busiest county in Texas for industrial projects under construction, with 18 industrial projects totaling $21.5 billion. Freeport LNG Development LP (Houston) started construction in December 2014 on a $5.5 billion LNG liquefaction plant and export terminal in Quintana, Texas. This project is expected to be operational by late 2018.

In addition to the projects under construction, Brazoria County has 84 projects totaling $7.2 billion in various stages of preconstruction planning.

In Cameron Parish, Louisiana, Cheniere Energy recently began construction of Train 5 at the Sabine Pass natural gas liquefaction plant. Construction on the $2.5 billion project will continue through the second half of 2018.
