Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Independent power generation company International Power Canada (IPC) (Markham, Canada) has placed an order with wind power company Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) (Randers, Denmark) for 27 units of V90 wind turbines, of 1.8 megawatts (MW) each, to be installed at the Pointe Aux Roches wind farm in southwestern Ontario. The scope of the order includes a service and maintenance agreement spanning five years. Vestas will deliver the consignment toward the end of the year, and the 49-MW power plant is slated to be brought online by mid-2011.
Ontario has formulated a feed-in tariff plan that offers stable returns for long-term power that is offloaded from renewable ventures. The Pointe Aux Roches project will be covered by the plan. Two major acts related to green economy and green energy were legalized last May, enabling the implementation of the scheme. The Ontario Power Authority (Toronto, Canada) will oversee the implementation of the scheme.
IPC has been associated with Vestas from as early as 2006, when they teamed up for a project built under Ontario's Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program. The venture has grown to comprise 24 V82 turbines, of 1.65 MW each.
IPC is involved in another project in Ontario, The Harrow, which it will complete shortly on the shores of Lake Erie in Ontario. Slated to begin in May 2010, the project comprises 24 units of V82 turbines, of 1.65 MW each. In all, it has been reported that Vestas, as of December 2009, has supplied 953 turbines to the country.
IPC is a subsidiary of International Power plc (OTC:IPRPY) (London, England), a private player with a global installed capacity of 33,227 MW. Further, Vestas has invested $1 billion in Colorado, with a view to establish a manufacturing base in North America. The complex will house a nacelle-assembly unit, a tower factory, and two blade factories.
Vestas recorded another order recently from the Red Lily Wind Energy Partnership, for the Red Lily Wind Project. The project will be implemented by Algonquin Power & Utilities Corporation (TSX:APF) (Oakville, Canada) in Saskatchewan. The American wing of Vestas will deliver 16 V82 wind turbines, of 1.65 MW each, to the venture.
