INTERPHEX 2010: Cautious Optimism Rules the Day as Pharmaceutical Conference Continues in New York

Despite the economy, pesky volcanoes, and the current turbulence of the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry, a collective positive attitude is emerging from the INTERPHEX 2010 trade show floor.

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Despite the economy, pesky volcanoes, and the current turbulence of the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry, a collective positive attitude is emerging from the INTERPHEX 2010 trade show floor. The annual pharmaceutical manufacturing conference and exhibition, now under way in New York City at the Jacob Javits Center (April 20-22), is delivering better news than expected. New product launches join new attitudes on how to approach success and sustainability.

Even as INTERPHEX floor traffic picked up on Tuesday, April 21, the animated discussions between attendees and exhibitors exemplified the importance of quality over quantity. Interest in collecting the kitschy industry giveaways paled in the shadow of gaining practical knowledge on how vendors' latest product offerings could be of benefit. With travel budgets trimmed, the majority of those in attendance were all about business and were able to engage in in-depth discussions that moved beyond a swipe of the badge.

Far from offering tales of woe, a number of exhibitors were downright enthusiastic about the direction their companies are heading. A stop at the stunning AES Clean Technology (Montgomeryville, Pennsylvania) exhibit showcased the importance of the new industry buzzword: "flexible." Offering the design, construction, and manufacture of modular cleanroom systems and custom cleanroom equipment to the life science industry for nearly 30 years, AES was an early pioneer in its offering of lean construction methodology and pre-engineered modular construction. The "flexible" concept allows the quick ramp-up to meet changing pipelines that customers need in today's marketplace. With its core of in-house professionals, AES has delivered more than 1 million square feet of adaptable cGMP cleanroom space to customers throughout the world.

A visit with Steris Corporation (NYSE:STE) (Mentor, Ohio), an industry leader in the fields of infection prevention, contamination control, and surgical and critical care technologies, illustrated the value of the company's Vaprox Hydrogen Peroxide (VHP) Room Decontamination Services. The technology is a low-temperature dry vapor that destroys the full spectrum of biological contaminants (spores, bacteria, viruses and fungi) on dry, pre-cleaned, non-porous exposed surfaces. This environmentally friendly, dry biodecontamination process is compatible with a variety of materials and leaves no residue. The VHP Sterilant decomposes to form water vapor and oxygen.

The team at Foster Wheeler Biokinetics (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Emeryville, California) aptly demonstrated the depth of their offerings and proficiency in delivering full-service, integrated systems solutions to the life science industry. Process systems specialists in design, engineering, manufacture, installation, validation, and startup/commissioning, Foster Wheeler Biokinetics serves the industry from conception to startup. With expertise as varied as the industry, the company's process experts provide technology solutions in mammalian cell culture and bacterial fermentation, solid dosage and sterile liquid lyophilization and filling, process utilities such as USP water, clean steam, biowaste inactivation, and clean-in-place (CIP).
