Iowa Cranks Up Ethanol Production and Construction

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). According to data extracted from Industrialinfo.com's Ethanol Production Database, the state of Iowa currently has twenty-one operational ethanol plants within its borders and has the capability of making over 910 million gallons of the renewable fuel annually. That's about 24% of the U.S. capacity for ethanol production.

The latest producer to join in the fuel additive fun is Pine Lake Corn Processors of Steamboat Rock, Iowa. The farmer-owned cooperative recently completed construction of a more than $25 million plant that will have the capacity to produce 20 million gallons per year of ethanol. The project has been in the works since 2001. The facility utilizes Delta-T Corporation's (Williamsburg, Virginia) ethanol production technology and was built by Monsanto Enviro-Chem Systems (Saint Louis, Missouri), its first ethanol plant project.

Another project in the state involves the now defunct 78th Street Ethanol plant in Blairstown, Iowa, which is preparing to restart a six-million-gallon-per-year plant under its new ownership, Xethanol Corporation (Blairstown, Iowa). The plant should be operational around the first week of June 2005.

Currently, there are six ethanol plants under construction in Iowa. The most recent project to begin construction is a second plant for Hawkeye Renewables LLC (Fairbank, Iowa). Hawkeye Renewables LLC is planning a summer 2006 completion of a grassroot 100-million-gallon-per-year plant in Fairbank, Iowa. The cooperative is also increasing capacity of an existing plant in Iowa Falls, Iowa, up to 95 million gallons annually.

Jay Brunson, Industrialinfo.com's Synthetic Fuels Manager comments, "Iowa is ranked number one in overall bushels of corn harvested and the state is not done with ramping up ethanol production, by a long shot. In addition to the six plants now under construction in the state, five additional projects are in the planning stage, and that number continues to grow."
