Johnson Controls Opens State-of-the-Art Battery Recycling Plant in South Carolina
Johnson Controls recently started operations at a new, state-of-the-art battery recycling plant in Florence, South Carolina. The plant incorporates a closed-loop manufacturing process.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Johnson Controls Incorporated (NYSE:JCI) (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) recently started operations at a new, state-of-the-art battery recycling plant in Florence, South Carolina. The plant, which is located on 686 acres, incorporates a closed-loop manufacturing process, including a 132,000-ton-per-year secondary lead smelter and polypropylene pellet production, and will have the ability to recycle about 14 million automotive batteries per year.
Some of the energy-saving features of the plant include a high-efficiency air emissions filtration system, a negative pressure ventilation system, and geothermal heating and cooling.
Construction of the project began in early 2011, and it represents one of $35 billion worth of Metals & Minerals projects in North America that kicked off construction in 2011. The value of construction starts in the Metals & Minerals Industry more than doubled in 2011 when compared to 2010.
Carlisle Associates (Columbia, South Carolina) provided architectural and engineering services for the project, which cost more than $150 million. The plant will directly employ about 250 people.
