Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Home to a strong coal mining history, Kentucky is more and more being considered as the site for new or expanding coal-fired power plants. Right now, there are eight power stations with fourteen units under development or being constructed that will utilize solid or gasified coal to supply about 4,700 megawatts (MW) to the grid in Kentucky.
East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC) (Winchester, Kentucky) is installing two 278-megawatt atmospheric circulating fluidized-bed (ACFB) units. The EKPC has Stanley Consultants, Incorporated (Muscatine, Iowa) involved with these installations at J K Smith Station near Trapp in Clark county, Kentucky, the other unit will be installed at its Spurlock Station near Maysville, in Mason county, Kentucky. EKPC is expected to buy power from a 110-megawatt plant under development by a private energy producer, Estill County Energy Partners LLC, a subsidiary of Fox Trot Corporation (Lexington, Kentucky). This plant will be built near Irvine, Kentucky.
