Laureate Pharma Expands New Jersey Biopharmaceutical Contract Manufacturing Capacity

Laureate Pharma (Princeton, New Jersey) has started construction on a $9 million expansion project at its biopharmaceutical manufacturing site in Princeton, New Jersey. In addition to adding a pilot-scale production plant, the contract manufacturing company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Safeguard Scientifics, Incorporated (NYSE:SFE) (Wayne, Pennsylvania), is expanding its purification production capacity of protein-based biopharmaceutical products.

Engineered by CE&IC (Burlington, New Jersey), Laureate’s new pilot plant will offer process development, production and purification of early-phase preclinical proteins. Although a stand-alone unit, the pilot plant will feature much of the same process technology used in the company’s existing large-scale cGMP plant. The pilot plant will include two production suites housing both stainless steel stirred-tank bioreactors and disposable single-use bioreactors. Construction on the unit will be complete later this year. The additional cGMP purification production capacity should come online in the summer of 2007.

Earlier this year, Laureate received $16 million in cash from the sale of its Totowa, New Jersey facility. Bought by Discovery Laboratories, Incorporated (NASDAQ:DSCO) (Warrington, Pennsylvania), the site was already dedicated primarily to work on the company’s lead product, SurfaxinR, a treatment for respiratory distress syndrome.
