Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--From underground gas storage caverns to the vaunted halls of higher learning, Mississippi is set to see nearly $500 million in capital project construction kickoffs in third-quarter 2017. Industrial Info is tracking nearly 20 capital projects that are expected to kick off next quarter in the Magnolia State.

Top projects set for kickoffs include those in the Pharmaceutical & Biotech, Power, Terminals, Pulp, Paper & Wood and Chemical Processing industries.

One of the top projects is the University of Mississippi's $135 million Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Building Addition. The project involves demolition of the Old Power Plant building on the 2,000-acre campus and the construction of a new 200,000-square-foot building. It will be equipped for the research and instruction of life science (including chemistry, biology, and microbiology), engineering and other related technological disciplines. Virginia Wrecking Company Incorporated (Daphne, Alabama) is working on the demolition/abatement end of the project. McCarty Company Incorporated (Tupelo, Mississippi) and Ellenzweig Associates Incorporated (Boston, Massachusetts) will continue with detailed design. Completion is set for the end of November 2019. For related information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Power Industry projects set for a third-quarter kickoff total $92 million. Chief among them is the Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) (Knoxville, Tennessee) 161-kilovolt Red Hills-Kosciusko transmission line. The project comprises construction of 34.8 miles of transmission line from the existing Red Hills Substation at Ackerman to the existing Kosciusko Substation as a part of the Leake Transmission project. Kickoff is expected in September, with completion in June 2018. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Only one Terminals Industry project is expected to kick off in Mississippi in the third quarter, but it is valued at $75 million. D'Lo Gas Storage is expected to begin construction of its grassroot natural gas storage cavern #2 at D'Lo. The company is working to develop a total working gas capacity of 24 billion cubic feet in three caverns. The cavern well requires a 3.67-acre pad that will either be matted or graveled during construction. Project completion is expected in the first quarter of 2019. For related information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The Pulp, Paper & Wood Industry comes in fourth place, dominated by a $35 million paper machine drive conversion at International Paper Company's (Memphis, Tennessee) 1,600-ton-per-day Unbleached Kraft Linerboard Pulp & Paper Mill, located at Redwood. The project involves converting old direct current drives to alternating current drives. The conversion will take place during a four-week maintenance shutdown starting in August. Jacobs Engineering Incorporated (NYSE:JEC) (Dallas, Texas) is providing design and engineering services. For related information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Expected Chemical Processing project kickoffs include Calgon Carbon Corporation's (NYSE:CCC) (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) $30 million specialty activated carbon line addition at its Bay Saint Louis facility. Pre-front-end, engineering and design estimates have been completed and construction is tentatively expected to kick off in September, with completion in first-quarter 2018. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
