Nabi Biopharmaceuticals Taps IPS to Manage Construction of $20 Million Investment to Expand Vaccine Manufacturing Capacity in Florida

Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Spurred by the strength of two promising drugs in their development pipeline, (Nabi Biopharmaceuticals)(Nasdaq: NABI) (Boca Raton, Florida) has begun an expansion of their Boca Raton facility. Nabi expects to spend $20 million on the project. The new bulk vaccine manufacturing unit is being built within the company's existing biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility.

Initially, the new production capacity will be used for the commercialization of StaphVAX, currently the company's lead product candidate and designed to prevent the most dangerous and prevalent strains of Staphylococcus aureus bacterial infections, which are a major cause of hospital-acquired infections and are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics. This rise of antibiotic resistance has markedly curtailed options for treating S. aureus infections. An estimated 12 million patients are at risk for developing these infections each year in the U.S.

Nabi expects to eventually add production of NicVAX a vaccine that is being developed to prevent and treat nicotine addiction by acting as an aid to smoking cessation. The company's stock soared late last month upon receiving very favorable results from NicVAX Phase II clinical trials. The World Health Organization estimates that there are 1.3 billion smokers worldwide and nearly 5 million tobacco-related deaths each year. Of that total, tobacco use is responsible for more than 440,000 deaths each year in the US alone. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 46 million adults and 3 million high school students in the U.S. smoke, triggering an estimated $75.5 billion in excess medical costs and another $81.9 billion in mortality-related productivity losses each year.

IPS Architectural/Engineering and Construction Firm (Tampa, Florida) is handling the design and construction of the facility. NABI hopes to begin production in 2005 and allows for the possibility of future expansions.
